Something old, something new, something borrowed, something true...

Why not put on your tiara from your wedding? I saw this staring at me and I said, yes! Not only does this remind me of an amazing day for my husband and I, but it reminds me of how some things aren’t what you plan on, and that’s okay. We all have an amazing day in our head and we look forward to dancing and enjoying our spouse, but some moments we didn’t predict make us smile to our soul.

For our day I had the usual expectations and excitement. I couldn’t wait to celebrate and crossed my fingers the rain would hold out. But what I didn’t know was that after the wedding you need to sign the official document to say you were married with witnesses. We tucked into the bridal suite with our witnesses and made the vows and day official. Not picturing this part in my head, not knowing this was coming, left it completely open for the two kids were truly are. After we had it all signed and ready Father John announced that it was all set and we were married. In our small crowd we jumped around like children excited for our new titles. Excited for the night and our futures together.

When I was little and even in the weeks leading up I wasn’t aware of this little sidestep in the day. This little break from the wedding day we all see in movies and television. It was a great little breath we could take together, in private, to really enjoy our future. These unplanned, unpictured moments are truly the best. Letting life give you what you need at just the right time. Sometimes it really isn’t about the cake, guests, dancing, or even kisses. It’s about that one second you have to look at your other half and realize you’re married. Then to take it in and jump up and down.

When I reminisce on our day, this is one of the more vivid memories I have. I loved this second we had with no audience to be ourselves with ourselves. Seeing his smile in that instant and kissing my husband really stopped time.

Now knowing it’s not the planned moments that mean the most, I had inspiration for Emma in “One Shared Heart”. Her moment with her dad that she couldn’t wait for was nothing like what she had expected. Giving her away wasn’t going to be easy, and hiding how difficult it would be was even harder. So for Emma her moment of unpredictability was to see her dad, not only in his strength but in his weakness. Her. The little girl he raised alone, was all grown up and getting married. But thanks to a perfectly timed memory from her mother’s necklace, she sees what she needs to see. She sees the truth and in that truth she can help him let go.
