We are in the fun period of the year in New England where the weather could act like Spring, Winter, or even Summer. There are no rules in March around here, so enjoying the last few inches of snow before the heat comes and melts it all away. All because you really don’t know, you wait one day too long you might wake up to soggy grass. It really only takes one night’s sleep to land you in a different season.
So we took advantage while we could and had a fun afternoon outside with this little girl. This reminded me of all the time spend out in the snow growing up. I grew up in New England so I love the visit of Jack Frost every year. I marked the turning of the year and the holidays by the snow and iceskating each year.
Each year we would round into the season and the magic would return. The possibilities are endless when you play in the snow. Not only is snow magical enough to cancel a day at school, but you could create houses, igloos, creatures, men, women, tracks for sledding, angels, ramps, and anything else your mind dreams up.
I always loved going out in the snow and putting off coming inside until the stars were out. I was absolutely in love with the snow in twilight, especially when it would be lightly snowing. The light snow blanketing the moon and all sounds in the world. I can still feel the snow melting on my hairline.
Raising my daughter in the same town that I grew up in means that she can have so many of the same experiences as me. I get to see all those beautiful moments again. Sharing them with a sweet little snow bunny who is just as in love with the magic of snow and winter. Especially since the fort from Gamma is holding strong after a few weeks now.
I am so excited to see her create her own snow forts, watch her jump onto a sled and scream down a hill, and build her own version of Olaf. Rolling our own memories in the yard and telling her stories of what I would do with my mom, dad, and brother outside. Teaching her the best ways to make a fort and the best hills to sled on.
Although every winter is shockingly cold and lands us annoyed with the snow removal. I could never live somewhere without at least a little visit from good old Jack Frost. Some fluffy snow to play in and some frozen ponds to skate on. All so Lyra can enjoy the best part of the season.
