Some trends come and go. But one trend that has been years in the making for me is the mermaid look of today. They sell rubber tails, you can attend a mermaid camp, and best of all long wavy colorful locks are in.
That style has been logged in my head since the days of Fantasia and My Little Pony. I always wanted the long bright colors draping around my face. I wanted the freedom to pick from a color pallet with no limits. Green, pink, grey, rose gold; pick you color and put it in. That’s all it takes to have complete creativity on your hair.
This might seem small and insignificant to many, but I love this new found freedom of colors. There is a quote from Dan Brown “The human spirit craves for mastery over its carnal shell.” I have always appreciated this simple statement giving the excuse as to why we all want to appear the way we do.
That is the freedom of tattoos, piercings and hair coloring being the norm in our world. Something I have waited 30 years to see unfold, giving me the confidence and the reins. Don’t get me wrong I’m not extreme and I don’t think I ever will be, but for me blue or purple hair with a few tattoos is my mastery. My design and the look that I crave over my carnal shell.
Sometimes I really feel as though I attracted this into my life. I have always loved all things glittery, mermaids, and of course anything that reminds me of Lisa Frank. That’s right I’m from that generation. So now that all of it is in style, and I do mean all of it, I feel as though my own obsession has led this back into my life. I can finally put glitter on my eyelids and purple in my hair and I wouldn’t be part of the out-crowd. I would look like so many others going out for a normal night out.
I had also always looked forward to a unifin. Those are a single flipper you wear on your feet so you resemble a mermaid. Little did I know this random Sharper Image product from 10+ years ago would transform into a whole lifestyle now. Not only do they sell fins that look like mermaids, but they are so incredibly detailed and imaginative you could convince anyone that you really are one. A huge step up from the black and blue plain flipper I had once imagined slipping into.
On top of all of that, several people make a living by combining my three favorites. They throw some waterproof glitter only their eyes and shoulders, color their hair turquoise and pink then slip into a rubber flipper that completes the mermaid. People are able to pay for an entire lifestyle from their adaptation of mermaids. It’s incredible to me that something that was so left-field growing up is now exactly where I want to be.
So I have fully embraced mermaid hair and I really do care.
