Always laughing with Pa

My whole life I always knew my dad was funny. He was the entertainment everywhere we went. My brother and I would egg him on to squeeze a few more laughs out or we would put him in an uncomfortable situation just to watch his reaction. Every time on vacation that we get lost in the car ride (before GPS) we would laugh as my dad made his best attempt at finding the destination with no outside help. Somehow the stress that inflicted itself on him turned into a comedy act by the second row in the car.

We still get the most laughs out of this old man. Sometimes at his own will sometimes at his expense, but always the best laughs.

When I had a daughter I knew that she would have a fun grandpa that would want to spoil his little granddaughter. What I didn’t expect was absolute joy he would bring to her heart. He is more of a second playmate lifting her up to play with objects we told her she couldn’t touch. He‘s looking for reasons to buy sweets and new dresses for his little Petunia. He makes her brave and curious to see something new. As long as Pa is there she only sees him.

This is all so much further than my mind could wander, their connection is beautiful and endearing. She looks for him first in every situation and loves demanding that he comes to play with her. The way she says “Pa” makes the demand that much sweeter.

We all joke about how much grandparents spoil their grandchildren. Of course him and Gamma spoil Lyra wildly constantly looking for things to show her and foods to share with her. But the most spoiling gift they give is their hearts. Spending so much time and changing their schedules so they can see her throughout the week. Every second counts when children grow at the speed that they do, after seeing just how fast that goes I think they are making sure that every free moment is filled with this little girl.

Not just their time has been moved and altered. They have rearranged their furniture and moved special necklaces for her to see. All for her to have the best experience at their house. So one little girl can walk in, find the hidden easter eggs, do a new craft, find the perfect snack, hide in the beds, and play with her silly Pa.

The Pa I always knew would be the most funny person for my little girl to play with. But as we are seeing, he is so much more.

Now if we could only teach him to stop letting Lyra play with Gamma’s 750 piece unfinished puzzle...
